extreme makeover - barack edition

you know that show on abc on sunday night, where they find a family that's emotionally desperate -- due to a lost job, sickness, bad luck, or just good old overweight american laziness?

...where there's at least one or two people in the family that are so sad and miserable that even the hosts on the show get all teary-eyed retelling the family's miserable story? where they build them a huge fu¢%!# house for free, with flat screen tv's elevators, playgrounds, themed bedrooms, jacuzzis, central air, and a whole bunch of furniture and gizmos? and send them to disneyworld while 800 people are building the house?

well, that's what barack's infomercial looked like last least the first 10 minutes. like he's gonna come in there and rescue you if you chose to have 6 kids and move into a house you can't afford. waaaaa. and he's gonna do it with rich people's money.

the whole thing makes me want to barf. especially since i already voted for the guy with my absentee ballot.

again, mccain is worse in every way, but this democratic tax thing, and health care thing is making me sick.

cause and effect*

in the past 2 or 3 months, since the national economic crisis started to go from very bad to worse to ridiculous, i have received more applications for credit cards, home equity loans or mortgage refinancing, and car loans than ever before.

they all have those special 'american sucker' low introductory rates, and they all have offers to transfer balances from anywhere they can.

seems like more of the same shit to me that got us into this mess.

Length of your introductory period will be 0.0% for 12 months from the date of cardmembership on purchases and balance transfers, 0.0% for 9 months from the date of cardmembership for balance transfers and purchases or 0.0% for 6 months from the date of cardmembership for balance transfers and purchases depending on our review of your application and credit history. After the promotional period ends, the standard purchase APR will be applied to all balances. (As of October 11, 2008, the standard variable APR for purchases is either 8.24% Rate 1, 12.24% Rate 2 or 16.24% Rate 3 in that order based on our review of your application and credit history, standard variable APR for cash advances – 19.99%.) However, if you default under any Card Agreement, we may automatically increase the rate on balances (including promotional balances) to a variable default rate of 28.99%. Minimum finance charge - $0.50. Foreign purchase transaction fee - 3.0% of purchase amount after conversion to U.S. dollars. Cash advance fee - 3.0% of cash advance amount, $5 minimum. Balance transfer fee - 3.0% of balance transfer amount, $5 minimum. New cardmembers only. Subject to credit approval. Additional limitations, terms and conditions apply. You will be given further information when you apply.

big day for big d

happy birthday dino!

It's the big 4-0 and the celebration has started down in new orleans. check out dino's photo blog for some of the best live music shots and musician portraits on the web.

capS sNeakinG in

wtf? i got a thing going on this blog where there's no caps. i don't like em, i don't need em. yet in the past several posts, they have been creeping into my typing. and i catch them and correct them. the last post (just below this one) has a few that got away and made it past my once discerning eye. damn.

starship orthodontist

jackson's first phase of a perfect american mouth started yesterday. here are some shots of my brave little dude at the practice of Drs. Mantzikos & Shamus. The place looks more like sickbay on a federation starship than a typical office d'tooth. it's even got an echo chamber, and giant windows that would offer a great view of outer space if we weren't just off of main street in armonk ny.

step one is a palate expander, followed by some wear-at-home headgear. the headgear will last about 6 months, and the palate expander will last about 18 months, and then it's time for some regular braces and a then a couple of lateral incisors.

here's a picture of a palate expander. every other day we get to turn a crank (see the arrows in the center?) and expand his teeth and the roof of his mouth. "hey, torquemada, whaddaya say? i just got back from the auto-da-fé. auto-da-fé, what's an auto-da-fé? it's what you oughtn't to do but you do anyway. skit skat voodely vat tootin de day"

socialist prep

since obama is on track to 'spread the wealth' and do everything his sorry ass can to make us a socialist nation, i figure that soon enough he's going to tell us that those with lots of data storage can afford to give some precious gigabytes to those less fortunate. if he can take a few bucks away from joe the plumber, he can certainly take some platter away from cathy the photographer.

so in preparation for government reallocation of my precious disk space, cathy and i added 4TB of magnetic goodness to the studio computer set up. now the house is humming along at about 9TB. that's all-in, including the laptops, but i gotta count them since their drives are available to all the macs in the house as long as their awake.

for automatic redundancy and hot swapability, we chose drobo from data robotics. for my fellow techies, especially brian and jason and kropper, here's a little video of me stuffing the shiny new drives into the box.

obama's got it wrong

oh boy. obama's tax ideas are ridiculous, but joe the (i'm not really a) plumber stuff cracks me up.

final day at fenway

on the last day of the season for the yanks, rich, jackson, vince and i headed up to fenway. The yanks were already out of the post-season, but they won this one. fenway is awesome. a true classic. plenty of room, great views of the game from anywhere, nice people, old and new at the same time.

ellyn, danny, gabby and sammy

ellyn and danny had a baby boy! liitle samuel benjamin logvin showed up on friday october 3rd, named for his great grampa sammy who checked out back in april. we were all together for the bris a couple of days ago in the same house that we sat shiva for grampa sam just 6 months ago.

i'm always a room or two away from the area where the actual bris ceremony is taking place, as was the case on friday at aunt adele and uncle michael's place. the rabbi did his thing, and from what i heard (both from family retelling the story and from little sammy's screaming) ths one took a particularly long time compared to what we are used to. i'm sure everything went fine, but this guy was no dr. phil (not the tv guy...phil sherman, the one and only who presided over jackson, jordan, sean, chase, and thousands of other fortunate babies who were "done" in a matter of seconds).

yesterday brian and his girlfriend jen, alex, and rachel, jenny, scott, sean and chase all came over for dinner and drinks (mostly wine, but scott and i chose to sip jack on the rocks for hours). it was great to have brian and co. up to the house for the first time.

today is a mr. mom day for me. megan (yay megan...we miss her!) came down from albany early this morning to meet cathy and go to long islnad for an all-day photo shoot. i am trying to get jaden down for a nap and then maybe schlep to the mall. otherwise it's a lazy, beautiful sunday up at the house.

there's nothing perfect for the mess we are in right now, but clearly john and sarah are not the answer.

i don't know what obama can really affect in 4 years, but I do know that most of this country needs to "believe" that big change is coming in order to feel better about themselves and their potential future.

it's like joining a new gym or getting a new girlfriend or starting a new job. as long as it "seems" like a radical change from what you had before, you feel energized and more optimistic. and that good energy tends to evoke real change in behavior and attitude.

until the bullshit rises to the surface, or it doesn't.

oh sarah

until recently, I was conflicted about the upcoming election because of a struggle between sociopolitical and ethical issues:

i am all for lower income tax, small government, capitalism versus tax-sponsored social programs for lazy, entitled americans...much of my political view is conservative.

but the war, the grave financial crisis, the deception, anti-choice (anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage), anti-technology (limiting stem cell research etc), religious fanaticism...these issues that exist in the current republican administration conflict deeply with my ethical values.

add to this mix the recent discovery of sarah palin's highly unqualified, unintelligent, embarrassing, ditsy, shifty, scripted remarks and I'm done.

obama's got my absentee vote in november while i'm celebrating my 40th birthday on the beach in jamaica.

and you?
