death star canteen

quick happenings

long time no blog, so here are some quick hits of goings-on over the past while:

jackson won third place in a chess tournament this past saturday. out of four games, he won 2 and had a stalemate on the other two. no losses. i was pretty proud. who knew he would turn out to be a baseball star and chess strategist. no complaints!

jaden has her first cold. ear infection. no fever, just a lot of stuffiness and mucous. she is delicious.

mianus is ready for move-in! that's right, we move on thursday. hard to believe. the house is amazing. big, beautiful, and feeling very homey even without the family and furniture. the kitchen is ready for a magazine shoot. maybe architectural digest. the custom cabinet company that built it has already inquired about a photo shoot for their own marketing. jack did a great job.

rental scam: we put up the hartsdale house for rent. we had an immediate offer from a doctor in the u.k. who was moving to new york to start work at a hospital in westchester. after much email correspondence, some fishy things started happening, and i sensed a scam brewing. i stopped the whole thing. the details are remarkable, but i'm not posting everything here. email me or post a comment if you really want all the juice.

tess is our new nanny! so far so good. she is from trinidad. more tess to come...photos stories etc.

november is travel month. i leave for vienna, salzburg, and zurich on friday! nothin' really going on, just hanging with rich bummin around on planes and trains seeing the sites. i have my handy wallpaper* city guide for vienna so we make sure we do it right...hot spots, great design, architecture, food, and sights in general.

then...after 6 years, we go back to a kick-ass villa in beautiful st. martin on november 10th. it will be a birthday celebration for mama mary (with my birthday too!)...jason, beth, jordan, cathy, jackson, me, jaden, mary and vince. jaden's passport photo is too cute. jackson's on his second passport already, and in the current photo he looks like a scraggly convict. awesome.

imac: yip, got the new aluminum imac. just installed leopard. it all rocks. overall this isn't a major os upgrade...didnt' need all the hype...but it's great looking, and is packed with some cool stuff. steve and co. must have needed some os revenue. this imac is going to look perfect in the new kitchen.

skitch! it's my new "can't live without" mac utility. if you are a designer, collaborator of any kind, photographer, editor etc., and you communicate visually with others via your mac, you gotta have skitch. it's beta only. it took about a month for me to get onto the beta program, but after a couple of days using it i'm hooked so hard that i'm touting it on my blog. that's software-love.

family squared

love and romance at the genetti

too late and too tired to download images and post them, but not too spent to say a few words about emily's bat mitzvah tonight. she looked beautiful, did a great job at temple this morning, and i give her and the williamsport niditches a lot of props for being such a special family, and for living out here so far away from most of us.

i have always been grateful to have been born into such a big, close family (and all the drama that goes with it)...and even more thankful to be a part of cathy's big, happy, loud!, loving family as well. whether it's a wedding or bat mitzvah or the now-famous reunion a few years ago at the nevele, i really do feel like this is truly my family too. seeing jackson and jaden grow up with their cousins on all sides is a real joy!

and today we spent some very rare time with jane and paul, grammys sister and brother-in-law from way way out in port allegany (google-map this!)...they had never met jackson and it seems like several years before he was born that we last saw them out on their farm.

pictures soon!

the next big thing?

facebook and i still have a relationship, but it was rocky for a little while. i just discovered some old friends from the image info days and i rekindled the slowly-dying/i'm-so-over-it relationship i had with facebook.

but lately my attention has gravitated to a new web phenomenon, the world of wists. haven't come acorss a wist yet? or you have but wasn't sure what it was all about? well, it's a like a visual del.icio.us. social shopping. quick eye candy samples of the url's you want to save and gather on the web, or the things other people save, all categorized and tagged.

recently i added my del.icio.us cloud to the left side of this blog...soon my wist will get a permanent spot as well.

Happy Birthday Mama!

Mom turns 60 in a couple of hours (October 16th) and in my opinion she never looked better. As ususal, we know how to throw a party. Thanks (again) to Chris at Buon Amici for a great place, great food, and great service. Thanks Beth and Cathy for making this a success!

Share the fun and view the slide show below!

rosh hashana redux

i forgot to post a few iphone photos from the recent holiday.

jackson hole detour

over the past couple of years dad has been telling me about the city congregation, a very forward-thinking group of intellectual jews that practice "humanistic judaism". it was a pretty interesting service, and although i am not running out to join up, i was intrigued by their approach and meaning of religion in-general. check the link above to learn more.

after the service, jackson stayed with joel and vero and josh, while cathy and jaden and i headed out to long island for night 2 of dinner (this year at jeff and debbie's in oyster bay...where are those photos???).

on the way out to the 'burbs, we were hungry, and even though rosh hashana dinners are gigantic, and best approached with an empty stomach, we opted for a detour off of the grand central parkway to the infamous jackson hole airline diner in astoria for a hot, juicy, mammoth cheeseburger, fries, and vanilla shake.

fuckin YUM. it's one of my favorite places and it's always worth the schlep.

amazingly we still had room for dinner.

persistence pays off

just before the last yankee game of the regular season, before joba's neck was covered in midges, slathering sweat and bug repellent (see photo), jackson went on a mission to see a yankee game out-of-town.

he stub-hubbed his way down to baltimore, with vince and mom and me in tow, to see the yanks take on the orioles. camden yards was a beautiful place to be on that breezy sunday afternoon, and the road-trip home created a memory we won't soon forget.

sky high

although we have had great times and fancy in-crowd parties, plus great holiday dinners on joel and vero's terrace, that was the old deck. after more than a year of renovation, we christened the new space this saturday with bagels and lox, and in typical joel and vero fashion, the whole thing is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s.

trellises and ivy and umbrellas are still in the works, but this is one helluva rooftop. enjoy the slides. look for jaden on her hands and knees cruising the ipe. and there are some cute shots of josh and jack, who spent the weekend together.
