before i forget

great holiday weekend...saturday we spent the day at beth and jason's. mom and vince were there too. we put up a bunch of pottery barn thingies in jordan's room. you know...those shelves and boxes that stick out of the wall so you can display all kinds of crap. in this case it wasn't crap, it was an array of stuffed animals, and beth only has the finest and cutest and cuddliest.

i also had to improvise the installation of a bunh of big wooden letters (o j d n r a). i was staring at them for a while, then realized that if i arrange them as "j o r d a n" my nephew could have his name on his wall. turns out that was the idea from the beginning. but the letters arrived without mounting hardware, so some heavy-duty Scotch mounting squares came to the rescue.

one day soon, someone will be lounging in jordan's room and a big ol' wooden "d" will come down on their noggin.

jason and i managed to leave the apartment and go to home depot in queens. it was a great trip, mostly because i got to hang out with my bro. also because the power tool section is a blast, and watching jason decide what cordless drill to buy is just about the greatest entertainment around. after two failed attempts at receiving help from some home depot guys, jason made his decision. then we checked every drill bit set in the store until we found the perfect one (with like a zillion pieces). i got myself a rubber mallet (you always need to have a rubber mallet) and a skil cordless screwdriver.

at the checkout, jason left his stuff on the counter (with a line of people behind him stalled in place) and meandered to the big display of uber-high-end cordless drills that caught his eye. well, we seemed to have missed these on the way into the power tools section, so now we needed to do more evaluation... just in case there's anything better than the trusty makita waiting back at the checkout counter.

anyway, that took 4eva. then we went to best buy to ask for a wii. that ended at the asking.

then back to the apartment for some pizza, more wall installation, and then home.

sunday david came up to the new house and did his genius thing, where he drops little nuggets of design gold, and laid down some big ideas for cathy's studio.

later, jackson and i flew his way-cool spiderman airplane up and down the street. of course it crashed a few times, and even got stuck in a tree. it's an awesome toy. then we played some baseball in the street. it was a beautiful outside.

monday jun wu and chris came over! we went up to the new house. we totally crashed the plane high up in a tree in the yard...the fuselage separated from the wings and tail assembly in a zooming crash into some branches. then the fuselage continued to plunge to the gound like a missile. that was over quickly.

we all came back to hartsdale and cathy made a killer lunch, we played ball, jun and jackson did some piano, and then we all took a group photo (thanks lindsay) before they left.

at some point during the weekend jackson and i watched ace ventura pet detective and my little guy was friggin hysterical.

enough of this, i can't type anymore and i can't remember what happened next.

more weekend

team photo day

nephew jordan and uncle josh

saturday (continued from the last post): so me, jules, and the girls (eleanor, mary, cathy and jaden) went to the mall late saturday. vince and jack stayed home to watch the yanks/mets game. we met jeff and debbie at the apple store, then hung out til 8 in nordstrom , and headed to dinner. we went back to mon's and decided to crash there.

sunday was a baseball day. we all went to a nearby ball field and played and played. me, jules, jack, vince, mom and cathy. eleanor spent time catching up on the phone, and jaden hung out under some trees with her biggest brother cayo.

i was never much of a sport-o...but since jackson's baseball kick and my business with the yankees, i am a baseball fan and i play almost daily. it was never a big part of my childhood, but i definitely have the love for the game that other kids get when they are very young.

that's a set up for what happened next.

we were all on the ballfield at an old local school in montclair. it's not a school anymore; i think it houses the administration offices or something like that nowadays. while we were out there in the sun, loving the game, smelling the grass, and enjoying the breeze, i started to see something in the distance. young kids, dressed in baseball uniforms, started to appear in the distance...coming from nowhere...gathering...and starting to toss baseballs to each other just beyond the outfield. it was surreal; i thought i heard whispering in my head, and i think james earl jones was passing by in a vw bus. one kid came closer. he walked right into the middle of our game, looked at me without an ounce of trepidation, and took the mound ready to pitch. he was about 7, brown hair, brown eyes, and had on a baseball uniform, cap, and glove, but no team and no parents anywhere.

so now the field of dreams thing was really taking off. it was kinda like those nights in the graveyard up at syracuse.

then, everyone's giggling, whispering "if you build it, he will come" because the whole scene is too funny: we are a motley crew playing a half-ass game, me, jules, vince, jackson, and cathy...on an old field with no one around, and suddenly there's baseball everywhere, and this mystery kid on the mound asking if he can pitch to me.

so we let him join us, and then i ask him his name. so he says, "jonathan", and then cathy loses it, gets hysterical, and decides this is a little "me" in a different time, showing the path i didn't take as a seven-year-old. totally costner-esque like that movie.

anyway, this kid was an ace, and jackson had a peer in age and skill for the rest of the time we played, which was cut very short when my little guy sidelined himself with what might have been a little heatstroke due to no breakfast and no water.

weekend recap

friday: home, hung out. jackson had a birthday party to attend until after 8pm so we didn't go hang out with jason and beth and jordan and jules and el and mom and vince in brooklyn.

saturday: rainy day...woke up and mama cathy made eggs, bacon, and pancakes. jules and vince arrived and jackson and i left with them for baseball team photos in armonk. while we were there cathy and jaden and cayo left the house for montclair. the girls had massages scheduled.

(at some pont in the morning, there was a group i.m. chat session going on that resulted in plans with jeff and debbie and the twins to meet us later in the day and go to the short hills mall and then to dinner.)

we correctly assumed that the little league game would be canceled that day, and we were correct. so we went to check out the house. minsky hadn't seen it yet, and i needed to look at a few things and make some decisions. the stain is being applied to the barn siding, the chimney is started, and we are getting a quote for a circular driveway.

after visiting the house, we left for jersey. vince and jackson and i left the apartment almost as soon as we got there. of course we were off to play baseball, despite the on off drizzle and rain, and chilly weather. mid-practice a couple of local kids came by and joined us. the guy's name was daniel, and i don't know the girl's name but she was darn good, but claimed to never play. might be a natural.

we got home and prepared to leave for the mall. at some point thru all of this, we found two teeth in jaden's mouth!

....ok, there's a whole 'nuther day to post....but it's already monday morning and cathy and i are off to the javitz center for the contemporary furniture fair! byeeeeeeeee.

yanks/red sox monday

thank you, stubhub.com, for the tickets to the yanks/bosox monday night. even though i can waltz into the house that ruth built any time day-or-night with my FU pass, getting some good seats and enjoying a game (especially the big games) is rare.

jason jr. and weekend plans

too damn cute. i think jules and el are visiting jason, beth, and jordan tonight in williamsburg, so maybe we will head over so i can give some hugs to my nephew.

but, if the weather is nice tonight, we will head to bedford. the best (and i mean best) carnival i have ever been too is on for two more days up there and i don't want to miss it. we happened upon it two years ago when we were house shopping, but missed it last year. it's not like i get cukoo for carnivals, but i have been to some dirty, cheesey, freakazoid ones, and this ain't that.

here's more info and a little history i found on the web....

need a good gift idea?

after a year or two of just thinking about it, i went out and bought my first digital photo frame. i chose a 7" frame from philips, with interchangeable frames. this is a great gift, and well worth the price. i got mine (two of them) at circuit city for $169 each.

one went to marion, and the other was for mary, until cathy told me that we already got her a massage gift-certificate, and now her frame is still new-in-the-box and slated fro grampa sammy on father's day.

after i got marion's frame home, i had a heck of a time getting it to read images off my mac, probably due to formatting issues on the 512MB sd card i bought with it. but i am a geek, and it didn't take that long to get everything working.

it couldn't be easier to use, and for that marion is thrilled. just pop in the card, set the timing between images, and impress yourself and your friends in no time. now all she has to do is bring the card over when she visits, and i will upload some new shots for another week of entertainment.

one week i might load it with a hundred photos of just me, just for fun.

spiderman 3

jeff, debbie, cathy and i went to see spiderman 3 on saturday. we did the usual premiere thing...this time they came out to us in westchester. we traded in our 7:45 tickets for the 9 pm show, and had time to buy mother's day gifts at circuit city , and get decent seats.

i gave spidey 3 a rating of 4 out of 10. didn't love it.

tuesday night i went again, this time with jackson. cathy and i like to see potentially scary movies first, then decide whether they're ok for jack to see. (like we have a clue).

anyway, we went to the imax theater, and my expectations were lower, and i knew that there would be an extra-mushy "mj" thread throughout the whole flick, and my rating jumped to a 7. really liked it. a lot. and the imax thing rocked.

the black outfit is bad ass. my favorite part i think.

switch

congrats to jeffrey, raguso, lafauci...a few die-hard pc users that have made the switch to the mac lately and never looked back. who's next?

how do you spell weiner?

i couldn't resist.

delicious, straight from prague. had 1/2 of one tonight at about 23:45.

cancel cancel cancel

nope, i didn't go to NOLA. knee injury. still hurts. no way i would have survived dancing in the sun all day, and no way i would have survived if i went and couldn't boogie.

and nope, I am not leaving for a suite at the westin in grand cayman on thursday. lenka has to have an emergency root canal, and it's cheaper for her to fly back to prague and have it taken care of by her mom (a dentist) instead of staying home and doing it here for a ton of american dollars. so she leaves for a week later today, and there's just too much going on with both kids for the grandfolks to be on their own while we are away.
